Can you buy a sauna with HSA/FSA money?

By Md Hasan · Updated 2026-09-22 · Editorial policy · How we rank

Read this row of the table first. Every brand below carries our commercial relationship with it, because on this page more than any other you should be able to check whether the list was arranged for your benefit or ours. Two brands that pay us offer this route. Two brands that pay us do not, which costs us money to tell you. Two brands that rejected us do. Full disclosure

generally required — it is not automatic

Paying with pre-tax dollars is the largest single saving available on a purchase this size — bigger than any discount in our Sale Index, where no advertised sale has ever once been off. It is also the one most surrounded by vague marketing, so here is what the sellers actually say, and what the route actually requires.

What this is, and what it is not

An HSA or FSA lets you spend money that was never taxed. Take a combined marginal rate of 25% as arithmetic rather than as a prediction: $5,749 of pre-tax money is money you would otherwise have had to earn about $7,665 to hold, and $11,599 of it about $15,465. Across the products here that spread is worth between roughly $1,916 and $3,866 — which is why it dwarfs every discount we track.

It is not automatic, and nobody here can tell you that you qualify. The route these sellers use generally requires a Letter of Medical Necessity from a clinician, connecting the purchase to a specific medical condition. The IRS does not treat general-wellness spending as qualifying by default, and a purchase that fails that test can be treated as a taxable distribution with a penalty. Whether your purchase qualifies is a question for your clinician and your plan administrator.

We are not tax advisers and nothing on this page is tax advice. We are recording which sellers advertise the route, with the wording they use and the date we read it.

“Not found” means we looked and did not see it. It is not a finding that a brand is ineligible or that a buyer cannot use HSA funds there — only that the seller does not advertise the route on the page we checked. Ask them.

The part that costs us money to tell you

Plunge Chill, Sweaty Yeti pay us commission, and do not advertise this route. Two brands that turned our affiliate application down — Peak Saunas, Redwood Outdoors — do.

If we arranged our recommendations around commission, this page would not exist in this form. It exists because the saving is real and larger than anything we could earn from steering you elsewhere. That is the whole basis on which we ask you to trust the rest of the site, and this is the cheapest possible way for you to test it.

What to ask before you count on it

“(1) Do you support HSA/FSA payment directly at checkout, or through a third party such as TrueMed? (2) What exactly do I need to provide — is a Letter of Medical Necessity required, and do you arrange it or do I? (3) If my plan later rejects the claim, what happens to my order and my refund rights? (4) Does paying this way change your return window or restocking fee?”

That last question matters more than it looks. Our return-policy database shows restocking fees up to 30% in this category, and a purchase route that complicates a refund is a purchase route that raises your risk.

Limits

Status read from each seller’s own public pages on the dates shown, with their wording quoted. Sellers change payment options without notice and we re-check. An earlier version of this record relied on a truemed-eligible tag in the product feed; that tag missed ten of the fourteen products that actually advertise the route, so every row here is read from the page rather than inferred from metadata. Tax rules are individual and change; the illustrative figure above is arithmetic, not a projection of your position.
